Why do I still get triggered?

You don’t get to control what triggers you.:-( The brain and body have a complex web of systems that are designed to protect you unconsciously. So things that are perceived as threats (whether it’s a person’s reaction or a post on IG) set off a cascade of signals to prepare your body for defense. Those may result in a physical reaction like panic or a cascade of addiction thoughts (that you thought you were over:-(). When our brain is in a state of emergency, it’s incredibly hard to think rationally or logically.

So unfortunately, you don’t have control over what triggers you. (Your physical reaction to some triggers may get less intense with therapeutic work.) However, you can control how you respond to the trigger! It can be scary & frustrating to find yourself triggered and feel out of control of your mind and body. Please remember it is not a judgment on your recovery. Your body is having a physical reaction, and right now it needs to be cared for.. maybe you try to show it a little compassion. Gently remind yourself that today this trigger is not a threat. Take steps to deescalate yourself as needed. As you calm down, you’ll be more able to respond increasingly logically and rationally in a way that takes care of your mind and body.
